North tops South in All-Star Game Slugfest

HARRISONBURG, Va. (7/22/02) - The Northern Division All-Stars defeated the Southern Division All-Stars last night 15-8 in the 2002 Valley League All-Star Game at Staunton's John Moxie Stadium. The two teams combined to score 23 runs on a combined 24 hits. There was little defense to speak of as both teams also combined to commit eight errors, five of which were committed by the South.

Front Royal's Bryan Smith (Duke), a late addition to the northern roster, was named the game's MVP. Smith was named to the team late last week replacing injured Cardinal teammate Ryan Norwood. Smith, the North's starting second baseman went 1-for-2 at the plate, scored two runs, and drove in three.

Other highlights for the North included Winchester's Rich Guarno (Maryland-Baltimore County) who went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, New Market's Chris Alexander (New Mexico) who went 1-for-3 with two RBI, and New Market's Chad Hill (Catawba) who was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Harrisonburg's Ryan Sittauer (San Francisco) hit the game's only home run, a three-run job off Luray's Mike Sills in the seventh inning, for the Southern All-Stars. Sittauer's Turk-teammate Matt Houston (Oklahoma City) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Waynesboro's Alan Beck (Western Carolina) was 2-for-5. New Market's Jeff Dagenhart (William and Mary) was credited with the win. Waynesboro's Greg Hansard (Virginia) was tagged with the loss after giving up three unearned runs in the second inning.
