(7/18/02) - The 2002 Southern Division and Northern Division All-Star Rosters have been released by the Valley League. The game will be played Sunday, July 21 at Staunton's John Moxie Stadium at 7:30pm. The southern team will be managed by Harrisonburg's Bobby Wease, and the northern team will be managed by New Market's Ray Hendrick. The managers were chosen based on team records for games played through July 14. Harrisonburg and Covington were tied on that date, however Wease was named manager based on the two team's head-to-head record which fell in the Turks favor 3-2. The managers of the other three teams in each division will serve as assistants.
Highlighting the selections to Wease's southern squad are a trio of stars from Covington's league-leading offense (.257) Joe Honce, Kevin Matuszek, and Cary Page. Honce is third in the Southern Division with a .320 batting average and leads the league in stolen bases (15) and runs scored (31). Matuszek has driven in a league-leading 26 runs, and Page leads the Southern Division with six home runs. Staunton's Taylor Cobb will be pitching in front of his home crowd Sunday with a league best ERA of 1.06. Cobb will be joined on the southern staff by four members of Harrisonbug's league-leading pitching staff (2.33), Paul Lubrano (1.17), E.J. Shanks (1.35), Logan Kensing (1.93), and Jason Martinez (2.14). Kensing also leads both divisions with eight saves.
Stand-outs for the northern side include Luray's Donnie Burkalter who leads the Valley League in home runs (10), slugging percentage (.574), and total bases (62). Winchester's Tim Pahuta will bring his league-leading RBI total (26) to Staunton for Sunday's showcase as well. Pahuta also leads the Northern Division in doubles with eight. Selections to the nothern pitching staff include Winchester's Clayton Hamilton with a division-leading ERA of 2.34, and Luray's Steve Strohm who is in a league-leading tie with Southern Division All-Star Carlos Guevara for strike outs (50).
