Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards, July 1-7

HARRISONBURG, Va. (7/8/02) - Matt Houston (Harrisonburg) has been named Valley League Player of the Week. Jeffrey Dagenhart (New Market) has been named Valley League Pitcher of the Week. The awards were given for games played July 1 through July 7.

Houston, a sophomore from Oklahoma City University, extended his hit streak to 10 games, as he hit safely in all five of the Turks' games. Houston's 10-for-17 performance at the plate was enough to edge Luray's Juan Carnicero for the honor. Houston's 10-game hit streak has him in a tie for the longest current hit streak in the Valley League with teammate Rich Mercado. Houston started two games at catcher for the Turks and served as the designated hitter in two others. On Friday night at New Market, Houston had a pinch-hit single and scored the only run of the ball game for Harrisonburg in the top of the ninth inning. At home Saturday night against the Rebels, Houston was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. During the week, Houston brought his average up to .368, which would be good enough for the league lead, however Houston has only appeared in 18 of the Turks' 25 games.

Dagenhart, a freshman from William and Mary, dominated the Turks in his lone start of the week Friday night. Dagenhart allowed only one single over seven innings of work to pick up his third win of the season as the Rebels beat the Turks 4-1. Dagenhart also fanned eight Turk hitters to bring his season total to 39, third in the Valley League. Dagenhart started the year for the Rebels in the bullpen making seven appearances in relief. In those seven appearances, Dagenhart's record was 1-1, with two saves and an ERA of 0.90. Since then, Dagenhart has moved into the Rebels' rotation to make two starts, and the results have been even better. In his two starts, Dagenhart has gone seven innings each outting allowing only three hits and no earned runs in both of the wins. For the season, Dagenhart owns a 3-1 record and a 0.38 ERA which is second only to Harrisonburg's Paul Lubrano (0.35).

Carnicero, along with Covington's Jason Boyd and Staunton's Ben Shannon, earned honorable mention for Player of the Week. Carnicero went 6-for-12 for the Wranglers scoring two runs and driving in five for the week. Shannon hit .278 for the week with a home run, two runs scored, two stolen bases, and five RBI for the Braves. Boyd was 6-for-9 on the week with two doubles, three runs scored, and an RBI for the Jacks.

Casey Campbell (Covington), Erik Wikstrom (Staunton), and Blake Hendley (Harrisonburg) all received honorable mention for Pitcher of the Week. Campbell started and won one game for the Jacks, yielding five hits and one earned run over six innings of work. Wikstrom went seven innings in one start for the Braves giving up seven hits and one earned run but received no decision for his effort. Hendley made two starts for the Turks, going 1-1. In his two starts, Hendley gave up four runs, only one of which was earned, and struck out 18.
