Covington, Winchester Win Series Openers


HARRISONBURG, Va. (8/1/02) - Top seeds Covington and Winchester opened up their respective Division Series last night with wins at home. The Lumberjacks defeated Harrisonburg 5-1 behind Steve Harden's (Delaware) complete-game 10-strikeout performance. The Royals took advantage of two New Market errors and defeated the Rebels 7-1.

Covington jumped on Turks' starter Jason Martinez (Mesa State) in the first inning scoring three runs on four hits. Kevin Matuszek (Morehead State) drove in two in the inning with a one-out double. Cary Page (Morehead State) followed with an RBI-single scoring Matuszek. The Turks got on the board in their half of the fourth inning when Brent Metheny (James Madision) tripled and later scored on Ryan Sittauer's (San Francisco) RBI-double. Jared Clements (Baylor) had an RBI-single in the fifth and Kevin Matuszek drew a bases-loaded walk in the sixth for the final two Lumberjacks' runs. Martinez (0-1) went just five innings allowing nine hits, five earned runs, and five walks. Harden (1-0) went the distance scattering eight hits, one earned run, and fanning 10.

Winchester's Tim Pahuta (Seton Hall) drove in three runs with RBI-singles in the fourth and seventh innings and a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Royals' starter Clayton Hamilton (Penn State) allowed just four hits after a shaky first inning to earn the win. Brett Spivey (Charleston) scored the Rebels' only run after Dan Batz (Rhode Island) drew a bases-loaded walk in the first inning. The Royals scored two more runs in the fifth inning on a error by New Market starter Aaron Smith. Smith (0-1) allowed six hits and four runs, only one of which was earned, in 4 1/3 innings. Kevin Kouzmanoff (Arkansas-Little Rock) had an RBI-double and John Oehler (Old Dominion) had an RBI-single in the seventh for the Royals. Hamiltion (1-0) went eight innings allowing the one run on five hits while striking out seven to earn the win.

Game two of the Southern Division Series is slated for 7:30pm tonight at Harrisonburg's Veterans Memorial Stadium. Game two of the Northern Division Series will also get under way at 7:30pm at New Market's Rebel Park.
