TWICE A TRIPLE PLAY - IT HAPPENED IN THE VBL

BY MARK PIFER, Sports Editor Covington Virginian Review

STAUNTON - A triple play - it's a rarity.

Two in the same game - now that's down right obscure.

Thursday night at John Moxie Stadium, both the Staunton Braves and Covington Lumberjacks turned the trick in their Valley League Baseball game.

The Elias Sports Bureau, the group that keeps all the official statistics for Major League Baseball, confirmed that only one time in history have two triple plays been pulled off in one major league baseball game.

The Minnesota Twins pulled off the gems in a game against the Boston Red Sox on July 17 of 1990.

Thursday night in Staunton, the Lumberjacks rolled over a 5-4-3 triple play in the first inning with Brave runners on first and second.

Jordan Mayer hit a sharp one-hopper to Jacks' third baseman Marshall Bernhard, who stepped on third and threw to second baseman Joel Pedretti.  Pedretti tagged second and completed the play with a relay throw to first baseman Andy Bennett.

Not to be outdone, Staunton trippled the Jacks with a line drive to first base with runners on first and second in the top of the fifth.

Brian Baisley speared the line drive off the bat of Tim Torres, stepped on first and finished off the performance wiht a throw to shortstop Jeff Beachum, who stepped on seocond.
