Mid-Atlantic Roster Released
NEW MARKET, Va. - The Valley Baseball League has announced its roster for the second-ever Mid-Atlantic Classic All-Star game to be played Monday evening in Harrisonburg.
The second-ever contest, which pits the VBL All-Stars against a group from the Cal Ripken League, is hosted this year by the Harrisonburg Turks and the VBL.
The 7:30 contest will be played on the Turks home field, Eagle Field at Veterans Memorial Park, on the campus of James Madison University.
This is the third straight year that the VBL and the Ripken League have scheduled an all-star game. The Ripken League won a 2-1 game in the inaugural 2009 contest while the 2010 game was rained out.
A committee of VBL Board Members, the Media Relations Director and coaches Bob Wease (Harrisonburg) and John Lowery (Winchester) selected the 30-man VBL team along with two alternates.
Harrisonburg, the current No. 6 summer league team in the nation according to Perfect Game, leads the way with five selections to the 30-man roster.
The Turks also have one of the two alternates.
North Division leader Winchester and 2011 newcomer Strasburg both have three selections while the remaining nine teams have two players each.
All teams except Strasburg and Luray have at least one field player and one pitcher on the squad. The Express have three field players and no pitchers and the Wranglers have two pitchers as representatives.
In addition to the game, a home run derby pitting the top five home run hitters from each league will be conducted as a kickoff to the evening.
