The Valley Baseball League All-North Division first and second teams have been selected by representatives of the six teams in the division.
Strasburg, the VBL Champion, led the voting with nine selections, including four on the first team.
Strasburg’s Landon Beaver (UAB), the league leader in home runs and RBIs led the selections in the infield. Beaver hit for a .354 average with eight doubles, 13 homers and 45 RBIs.
Joining Beaver in the infield were Woodstock’s Luke Keister (Shenandoah) at second base and Will Tippett (College of Charleston) as shortstop along with Strasburg’s Topher Jones (Ole Miss) at third base. Keister hit .293 with four doubles and 19 RBIs. Tippett posted a .275 average with five doubles, two triples, three homers, 18 RBIs and 19 stolen bases. Jones hit .366 with three doubles, four homers and 16 RBIs.
The outfield includes Purcellville’s Anthony Fernandez (St. Bonaventure), Strasburg’s Eddie Castillo (New Orleans) and Woodstock’s Jordan Evans (Tampa). Fernandez posted a .368 average with four doubles, five homers, 29 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. Castillo hit .379 with 10 doubles, seven homers and 24 RBIs. Evans put up a .359 average with four doubles, two triples, a homer, 16 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.
Front Royal’s Dylan Winebrenner (Richmond) is the first-team catcher. Winebrenner hit .298 with four doubles, a homer and 11 RBIs.
Due to a tie in the voting there are five pitchers on the first team.
Purcellville Cannons teammates Corey Costello (Radford) and Connor Hensley (Rollins) were unanimous selections on the mound. Hensley was 4-1 with a 1.36 ERA. He struck out 42 batters in 33 innings. Costello was 1-0 with a 1.84 ERA. He struck out 37 batters in 24.1 innings pitched.
Cannon’s teammate Nick Staszak (Mercer) also made the first team along with Woodstock’s Sean Keener (Virginia Wesleyan) and New Market’s Spencer Williams (Liberty). Staszak did not allow an earned run in 19 innings pitched and struck out 26 batters. Williams was 1-2 with a 2.03 ERA. He led the North with 46 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched. Keener finished 2-1 with a stellar 1.08 ERA. He pitched 33.1 innings with 24 strikeouts.
Strasburg’s Josh Ibe (Stephen F. Austin) is the DH. Ibe hit .325 with three doubles, eight home runs and 39 runs batted in.
Front’s Royal’s Brandon Butler (Slippery Rock) is the utility player and New Market’s Blaine Waltimyer (PSU-Harrisburg) is the two-way player. Butler finished with a .326 average, four doubles and 12 stolen bases. Waltimyer posted a 2.64 ERA in 17 innings on the mound. He hit .224 with five doubles and 11 RBIs.
