Charlotteville OF Cade Belyeu (Auburn) has been selected the South Division Player of the Week and Waynesboro’s Ryan Cleary (St. Andrews) is the South Pitcher of the Week (St. Andrews).

Belyeu terrorized the opponents’ pitching staff in the opening week of the season, hitting for a .429 average. He leads the Valley Baseball League in homers with four and RBIs with 14. Belyeu has hit safely in six of seven games, and he has at least one run batted in in all seven games. He homered twice in a 10-3 win over Culpeper.

Other nominees include:

Brennan Wright (Meridian CC): The Covington Lumberjack hit .450, the best average in the VBL during the opening week of play. He was 9-for-20 with two doubles and five RBIs.

Kishon Frett (FIU): The Waynesboro OF hit .429 for the Generals with a homer and four RBIs.

Jon Howard (Mt. Olive):  The Culpeper infielder hit .409 on the week and ranks just behind Cade Belyue with three home runs and 11 RBIs.

Matthew Delgado (Rogers State): The Harrisonburg Turk hit for a .400 average with a homer and six RBIs.

Waynesboro’s Cleary made three appearances in the opening week and pitched a total of 8.1 innings. Cleary is 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA. He has allowed eight hits while striking out eight. He has not walked a batter. His best outing came against Covington when he picked up a victory, allowing just four hits in 4.1 shutout innings. Cleary struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Other nominees included:

Nate Ward (Florida Southwestern): The Staunton reliever made three appearances and recorded two saves. He allowed three hits and one run in 3.1 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.

Tyler Smith (Auburn): The Culpeper reliever made two appearances and pitched 5.2 innings. He allowed just two hits and no runs. Smith inherited five base runners and stranded all five.

Carson Morton (Wingate): The Harrisonburg RHP is 1-0 after two appearances. He has 10 strikeouts and a 2.00 ERA in nine innings pitched.
