Mother Nature was a big winner on opening night with four games postponed due to weather, but the Staunton Braves and Harrisonburg Turks picked up victories to open the season.
Staunton 7, Covington 6
The Braves won in dramatic fashion when Wyatt Piefer stole home in the bottom of the ninth to walked off the Lumberjacks.
Wyatt Campbell (Florida Southern) and Ryan Fluharty (USC-Aiken) both homered for Staunton. Peifer and Ty Galusky (East Tennessee State) each added two hits.
Griffin Madden JMU) was dominant in relief, allowing just two hits in 4.1 shutout innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
Harrisonburg 12, Waynesboro 10
Harrisonburg rallied with two runs in the eighth inning and four more in the ninth to overtake Waynesboro 12-10.
Jackson Schrafft (St. John’s River) was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs for the Turks. Phillip Garcia (Gulf Coast CC) also had two hits for the Turks.
Anthony Clavet (Kennesaw State) was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs for the Generals. Seth Buchanan (VMI) and James Green II (Abilene Christian) each finished with two hits.
