PURCELLVILLE – After falling behind 7-0, Purcellville scored 21 unanswered runs to stun the Charlottesville Tom Sox, 21-8, in Game 2 of the VBL Championship Series.
The victory by the Cannons evens the Series at 1-1 and forces a deciding winner-take-all Game 3 Thursday evening at Charlottesville H.S. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Tom Sox jumped out early with five runs in the top of the first. Robbie Lavey (George Washington) put the Sox on the board with a run-scoring single. After a run scored on an error Dean Mihos (Coastal Carolina) added a base-loaded triple for a 5 0 advantage.
Charlottesville continued to roll with two more runs in the second on Caden Ferraro’s (Blinn) two-run double, making the score 7-0.
Purcellville started its comeback in the bottom of the second. Two runs scored on base-loaded walks and a third scored on a single by Kaleb Freeman (Georgia State), trimming the deficit to 7-3.
The Cannons pulled even in the third inning on a grand slam homer by David Sorg (Arkansas-Little Rock), tying the score at 7-7.
Purcellville blew the game open with a 10-run outburst in the fourth inning. Freeman delivered the key blow with a grand slam, making the score 15-7. Jake Slade (Virginia Tech) doubled home a run and then scored on a single by Mitsuki Kohno (Christian Brothers) for a 17-6 Cannons lead.
Freeman finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and seven RBIs. Sorg was 1-for-1, walked four times and belted a grand slam to finish with five RBIs. Slade was 2-for-4 while Kohno finished 4-for-4 with four runs scored and two runs batted in.
Lavey was 2-for-4 for the Tom Sox with two runs scored and one run batted in while Cooper Blauser (Jacksonville State) finished 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
