CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina celebrated Gary Gilmore Day this past weekend during the Chanticleers final home series of the season, recognizing the legendary head coach who is retiring at the end of this season.
Gilmore, who was inducted into the Valley Baseball League Hall of Fame this past summer, will wrap up a 35-year coaching career with the past 29 years at Coastal Carolina.
Gilmore has taken Coastal Carolina to 18 NCAA Regionals, three NCAA Super Regionals, and has won 26 combined conference regular season and tournament titles at Coastal. In 1993. In 2016 he led Coastal to the Division I National Championship.
He led USC Aiken to the 1993 NCAA DII College World Series and the program’s second straight NCAA DII tournament appearance. He won two Peach Belt tournament titles while at USC-Aiken.
He was the consensus 2016 National Coach of the Year. Nine times, he was named Big South Conference Coach of the Year and twice he was named Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year.
This year’s team is 30-21 and plays its final home game of the season Tuesday when the Chanticleers host Clemson. Coastal will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Marshall.
