How it happened: The Tom Sox broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning in Saturday’s win at Staunton. Ethan Gibson (Virginia Tech) and Jake Books (Coastal Carolina) had run-scoring hits in the sixth as the Sox opened up an 8-2 lead. Four Charlottesville pitchers combined to strike out 15 batters.
Tom Sox Highlights: Johnnie Lopez (Seminole State) was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Robbie Lavey (George Washington) was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and a solo homer. Books finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Nick Parham (ECU) was 2-for-4.
Braves Highlights: Jake D’Altrui (New Orleans) was 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Hayden Gustavson (State College of Florida) was 2-for-5.
Harrisonburg 11, Waynesboro 8
How it happened: The Turks snapped a 5-5 tie with three runs in the sixth and held on to defeat the Generals. Jose Perez (Rollins) led off the sixth with a triple and scored on a single by Jacob Green (Seminole State), giving the Turks a 6-5 lead. Cameron Harris (Wingate) followed with a double, scoring Green for a 7-5 lead. Harris later scored on a single by Jack Cannizzaro (JMU), making the score 8-5.
Turks Highlights: Perez was 4-for-4 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Cannizzaro and Luke Hatcher (West Georgia) were both 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Harris was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Green was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs. Christopher Katz (Wake Forest) added two RBIs. Carson Morton gave up one hit and struck out three in the ninth to earn the save. Starting pitcher Hudson Lee (Wake Forest) went four innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits. He struck out three and walked two.
Generals Highlights: Elijah Borjas (Colorado State-Pueblo) was 2-for-5. Bentley Yeatts (Longwood) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one run batted in. Kyle Cincinnati (Mount St. Mary’s) was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Sion Barnette (Limestone) was 2-for-4.
Culpeper 11, Covington 3
How it happened: Covington took a quick 2-0 lead Saturday, but Culpeper took the lead with four runs in the fourth inning on Ryan Kroepel’s (Arizona State) grand slam and the Cavaliers pulled away for the victory.
Cavaliers Highlights: Kroepel hit two homers and finished the night 2-for-3 with seven RBIs. Eric Correa (Rice) was 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Lumberjacks Highlights: Jose Alfonso was 2-for-3 with a solo homer.
