In an unprecedented decision, New Market has chosen to not participate in the 2022 playoffs.
Team President Mike Jones made the following statement:
“After careful consideration by myself, the Executive Committee of the New Market Rebels Board of Directors, and Head Coach Arthur “Ted” Stenberg, IV, the Rebels organization wishes to remove itself from consideration in any possible post-season play. The makeup game scheduled at Front Royal on Sunday, July 24 will be our last for the 2022 season.
Our roster has continued to be depleted by injuries, player call-backs, innings limits, and attrition. It has been further compromised by an inability to bring in replacement players. As such, fielding a competitive and complete team has increasingly become a challenge. Please know that it is our common goal to finish out the remainder of the regular season schedule to the best of our ability.
This decision has not been taken lightly. It is, however, in the best interest of our student athlete players. Their safety and well being is our top priority.”
In the North Division, currently Woodstock is the first seed, Strasburg second, New Market third, and Purcellville fourth. This will elevate Purcellville to third, with Winchester and Front Royal battling for the fourth playoff spot. (The final playoff seeds are subject to the last few days of the regular season, of course.)
