Purcellville slugger Victor Figueroa (Florida Southwestern) won the 2024 VBL Home Run Derby with an impressive display in the final round Saturday evening at Fireman’s Field.
Figueroa led after the first round, sending four balls out of the park. He was joined in the semifinals by Covington’s Chenar Brown (Louisiana Monroe), who hit two homers in the first round, and Charlottesville’s Johnnie Lopez (Seminole State), Strasburg’s MJ Phillips (Towson) and Waynesboro Kishon Frett (FIU) with one homer each.
In the semifinals, Figueroa and Phillips, both lefthanded hitters, each hit two homers to the short part of Fireman’s Field in right to advance to the championship round.
Phillips hit first in the championship round and hit a pair of homers. Figueroa made an out on his first swing of the round and then launched three straight over the rightfield fence to win the Derby.
