Four games were played on Friday. We had a bid for a no-hitter, our first International Tie Breaker in extra innings, a walk-off, and a slugfest.

Results

  • Staunton 7, Waynesboro 1- This was the no-hit bid… see the pitcher of the day below…
  • New Market 8, Woodstock 7 (10 innings)- The Bandits scored five in the bottom of the ninth (the last two on a Tomas Sanchez single), but New Market scored twice in the tenth and held the Bandits to one in the bottom to win.
  • Harrisonburg 4, Charlottesville 3- The Turks walked off when Casey Smith singled in Christian Ficca in the bottom of the ninth. (THIS GAME HAD TO BE SENT TO POINTSTREAK FOR A FIX. IT MAY BE SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE THIS APPEARS IN THE STATS.)
  • Front Royal 15, Purcellville 9- The Cards scored nine in the fifth to take a 13-1 lead, only to see the lead evaporate as the Cannons scored four in both the sixth and seventh… but Front Royal added two in the eighth to finish this one off.

Hitter of the Day

Out of several excellent candidates, the hitter of the day is Front Royal’s Anthony Boccio (Widener), who went 4-6, with a run, two stolen bases, and five RBIs. This should not come as a surprise, as Boccio hit .409/.491/.555 this spring in 137 at-bats, and was named first team All-Region.

Pitcher of the Day

Our pitcher of the day is Staunton’s Ryan Yerby, from Rensselaer Polytechnic, who fired five no-hit, shutout innings against Waynesboro. He did walk six, but also struck out seven, and earned an overall game score of 68, the highest of the night. He went 2-4, 5.36 this spring for RPI, with 50 K’s in 40 innings.
