The Staunton Braves have hired Hurricane (W.Va.) High School head baseball coach Brian Sutphin to coach the Valley Baseball League team in 2025.

Sutphin has coached for three decades, both at the high school and college level.

He began his coaching career as an assistant at West Virginia State University in 1995 and a year later took the head coaching position at Nitro High School.

After three years at Nitro, Sutphin took an assistant coaching position at West Virginia. After two seasons with the Mountaineers, Sutphin became the head coach at Alderson-Broaddus College.

Sutphin returned to the high school ranks as head coach at St. Albans in 2004 and then took over at Hurricane H.S. in 2009.

He had led Hurricane to three state titles. Sutphin has been named the MSAC Coach of the Year six times and the state coach of the year multiple times. He has won more than 400 games as head coach at Hurricane.

Sutphin has coached more than 20 players who have been selected in the MLB draft and over the past decade has send 16 players to Division I programs.
