Every week to ten days, we’ll take a look at some of the team stats in our league, and attempt to rank the teams from strongest to…. not strongest.
Team record is important, of course, but if we were to rank the teams in that order, the ranking would just be called “Standings.” So we’ll look a little deeper, like a team’s composite batting and pitching statistics, along with runs scored and runs allowed.
The last couple things to keep in mind: this is just one guy’s opinion, what has happened in the past definitely does not mean that we know what will happen in the future, and it’s really, really early. Most teams have players who have not arrived yet for various reasons. Feel free to disagree, of course!
Stats: Team record, runs scored-runs allowed, batting average/on-base percentage/slugging percentage, team ERA, walks/strikeouts and innings pitched, and then something about the offense.
The Cream of the Crop
- Covington: 3-1 (Record), 17-9 (RS-RA), .209/.295/.333, 0.75 ERA, 18/37 (BB/K) in 36 innings. That team ERA is crazy. Nine runs allowed in four games?!? The Jacks are led at the plate by Gavin Baird (Eastern Kentucky) and Cole Ketzner (South Alabama).
- New Market: 4-2, 36-26, .251/.363/.360, 3.91, 25/67 in 53 innings. Garett Wallace (East Tennessee State) leads the league in both home runs and RBIs.
- Strasburg: 3-1, 26-18, .221/.382/.267, 4.11, 21/37 in 35 innings. Walt Bailey (Alabama) and Jonah Cox (Oral Roberts) lead the offense- looks like the slugging hasn’t arrived in town yet!
- Woodstock: 2-3, 30-23, .279/.368/.355, 4.00, 23/49 in 45 innings. All three losses by one run, the offense is clicking behind Jose Hernandez (Miami Dade), Tristan Moore (Palm Beach State), and Tomas Sanchez (Texas Wesleyan).
The Middle
5. Harrisonburg: 2-2, 21-21, .234/.346/.314, 2.73, 18/30 in 37 innings. Matthew Mamatas (Georgia Southwestern State) and Seaver King (Wingate) (who also made a couple awesome fielding plays lately, too) are at the top of Harrisonburg’s hitting crew.
6. Staunton: 2-3, 33-33, .256/.368/.381, 5.00, 40/55 in 45 innings. Clearly, walks have been an issue. Joe Delossantos (William & Mary) and Jeffrey Snider (Bridgewater) are the catalysts in the lineup so far.
7. Winchester: 3-3, 28-32, .233/.342/.389, 4.59, 31/70 in 51 innings. 12.4 K/9 for the team? Wow. Matthew Rivera (Ball State) has three home runs already.
8. Waynesboro: 2-2, 24-29, .227/.392/.320, 5.25, 22/34 in 36 innings. The team has the highest OBP in the league. Jalen Vasquez was 4-4 for getting on base until the scorekeeper in Waynesboro inadvertently tripped him in the press box last night… which apparently stopped the streak.
Work to Do
9. Front Royal: 2-3, 24-28, .185/.330/.236, 4.00, 23/49 in 45 innings. Anthony Boccio (Widener) leads the offense at .368.
10. Charlottesville: 2-3, 23-26, .185/.323/.247, 4.18, 23/39 in 43 innings. Gavin Abrams (Clemson) has nine walks; Tristan Bissetta (also Clemson) has the team’s home run.
11. Purcellville: 2-4, 34-51, .240/.369/.380, 6.22, 46/67 in 52 innings- good strikeout numbers! Bear Madliak (Georgia) is hitting .462; Cullen “Bear” Horowicz (Army) is hitting .292 with two home runs. The Bears have it, obviously.
Well, that’s it for now. None of the teams have even completed 20% of the schedule, so expect major changes on the next power rankings!
